NOTA BENE 10 BETA

Our next-generation Nota Bene 10 (now available in a beta release) runs natively on 64-bit versions of Windows, and thus no longer requires the virtual mode described below. While this is a beta release, many NB users are already using this version for all of their work, as described in the above links.

If you are running a 64-bit version of Windows, you now have three choices:
  1. Installing a copy of the beta release of Nota Bene 10 in native mode, without worrying about virtual mode
  2. Installing our current shipping release, Nota Bene 9.0, in virtual mode — this provides you a complete, tested, and fully supported version that gives you reliable access to all of Nota Bene’s research and writing tools
  3. Installing both — NB 9.0 in virtual mode, and NB 10.0 in native mode —, choosing the appropriate version each time you start
We recommend the first of these options, even though the current release is a test version and some issues remain. If you choose this option, you can skip the rest of this page. If you choose the second or third options, the notes below describe how you proceed. (If you want to run both versions, see the Installation Notes for NB 10.) Alternatively, you can install NB 9 now in the virtual machine, and use the full Nota Bene now, with an easy upgrade — at whatever time you choose — to NB 10.

NOTA BENE 9

Nota Bene 9.0 runs on Windows 7. But how it works depends on which version — 32- or 64-bit — you have. To determine this, click the Windows Start button, then Control Panel, Systems & Maintenance, Systems. The System Type will be listed as either 32-bit Operating System or 64-bit Operating System.

If you try to run earlier versions of Nota Bene on Windows 7, you will encounter other issues besides those noted below. These have been addressed in version 9.0.

32-bit Windows 7 (including Windows 7 Starter)

Nota Bene runs in regular mode on all 32-bit versions of Windows 7, just as it does on similar versions of Vista. If you have a 32-bit version of Windows 7, including Windows 7 Starter, you can install NB as you have for the last decade, without any additional considerations.

  • If you get an error #105 (“Setup is unable to find installation languages”) when trying to install NB
on Windows 7, that means that you have a 64-bit version of Windows.

    64-bit Windows 7
To run the current version of NB on a 64-bit operating system, an additional installation step is required. Exactly how you proceed depends on which version of Windows 7 you have.

    64-bit Windows 7 Premium
The easiest way to run NB under 64-bit Windows is to get Windows 7 Professional (or the Ultimate or Enterprise versions) and use XP Mode as described in the next section. If you have Home Premium, you can purchase the Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade from Home Premium to Professional. It is available for $59.99 at Amazon (price subject to change). See the section below for more information about installing NB on the Professional, Ultimate, or Enterprise versions of Windows 7.

If you do not want to upgrade to the Professional edition of Windows 7, an alternative is to install both of the following:

  • “Virtual machine” software, such as VMWares' Player (this is available for free)
  • A copy of Windows (preferably XP) under that virtual machine (most people can obtain a low-
or no-cost version of XP from university IT departments; others may have unused [that is,
uninstalled] copies from old machines available)

Although installing a virtual machine and then XP will take a little initial setup time, doing so involves almost no effort/interaction on your part. And once installed, you will be able to use NB effectively on that system.

See also the "Notes for all 64-bit Windows 7 - Premium, Professional, Ultimate, or Enterprise" section below.

  • 64-bit Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate, or Enterprise
The easiest way to run NB on 64-bit versions of Windows 7 is under “XP Mode” on Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate, or Enterprise.

  • XP Mode is available for free to all users of Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate, or Enterprise.
However, you will need to download and install it before you can use it.

For written documentation and videos on how to install XP Mode and how to install an application (like Nota Bene) using XP Mode, see http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/support/default.aspx. The PDF file “Running Windows XP Mode with Windows Virtual PC” and the videos are particularly helpful.

Notes for all 64-bit Windows 7 — Premium, Professional, Ultimate, or Enterprise

    • Note that the installation file that you downloaded (SWS9-2.EXE or LWS9-2.EXE) needs to be in the XP Mode machine (for example, on the C: drive in XP Mode). To get it here, either download it from our website using the Internet Explorer that is part of XP Mode, or copy it from the host machine's drive to the XP Mode drive (you simply find it on the host machine, copy it, and then click into the XP Mode Machine, click Start, My Computer, and browse to the temporary folder where you want to put it).
    • Once installed, if you find that the on-screen display is not as crisp as it should be, make sure that ClearType is on (check Windows Help for instructions).
    • If you want to be able to open files directly from, and save files directly to, the C: drive of Windows 7 (i.e., the non-XP Mode drive), you will need to map that host drive to a drive letter. To do so, in My Computer in XP Mode, select Tools, Map Network drive, and then choose "\\tsclient\c" [without the quotes] for the name of the C: drive [for example]). Repeat for any other non-XP-Mode drives that you want to access.
